A NEGORO-LACQUER KURA AND ACCOUTERMENTS

Muromachi (1333-1573) or Momoyama (1573-1615) period, 16th/17th century
The saddle of gunjin-gura (campaign saddle) type decorated in Negoro lacquer bordered by gold leaf accents, and with gilt central heraldic crests on the pommel and cantle, with the original saddle padding with stirrup leather and lateral belly guards, the leather fittings all decorated with matching red and gilt-black lacquer, and decorative embossing, with an effaced signature and date on the underside, originally black lacquer, with overwritten characters in red, the red likely done at a later date to enhance the original worn characters
With a Jūyō certificate # 12042149 issued by the Kokusai Nihon Kachū Bugu Shinkō Kyōkai (International Society for the Promotion of Japanese Armor) attesting the dating of the saddle to the late Muromachi period
