AN AOGAI-LACQUER AIKUCHI TANTŌ GOSHIRA-E

Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century
The saya decorated with chidori (plovers), butterflies, young pine boughs, and maple leaves in gold hiramaki-e, the silver hardware all chiseled in katakiribori wisteria and paulownia flowers and vines, the kurikata formed as a shishi (mythical Chinese lion) mask, the eyes highlighted in shakudō and gold, the saya fitted with matching silver kozuka and wari-kōgai, the tsuka wrapped in baleen
With a Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Especially Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 226241 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), dated February 18, 2002
