A SUISHINSHI SCHOOL KATANA IN MOUNTS (CIRCA 1864)

Late Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1864
Sugata (configuration): honzukuri, iorimune extended kissaki, toriizori
Kitae (forging pattern): itame hada mixed with mokume hada in jinie
Hamon (tempering pattern): gunomoe midare in nie and nioi, konie, sunagashi, and kinsuji
Bōshi (tip): komaru, hakikake
Horimono (carving): omote side with a large and impressive shin no kurikara, ura side with gomabashi and tsume
Nakago (tang): ubu with two holes and ōsujikai file marks
Habaki (collar): one-piece, gilt
Nagasa (length from tip to beginning of tang): 32 3/8in (82.2cm)
Motohaba (width at start of tempered edge): 1 5/16in (3.3cm)
Sakihaba (width before tip): 15/16in (2.4cm)
The koshira-e comprising a lacquer and crushed-shell saya, the tsuka wrapped in blue silk over same and fitted with gilt ishime fuchi-gashira, and menuki formed as dragons, the iron tsuba pierced with a dragon in clouds and finished with a gilt fukurin
With a Kantei certificate #18766 issued by the Nihon Tōken Hozon Kai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Sword) attributing this sword the Suishinshi school, dated March 1, 2019
