SESSHŪ MOTONAGA (ACTIVE CIRCA 1820-1830)

A Yamashiro Ōtantō with Mounts
Edo period (1615-1868), dated 1823
Sugata (configuration): hirazukuri, iorimune, slight sakizori curvature
Kitae (forging pattern): running itame hada with visible jinie
Hamon (tempering pattern): suguha in nie with a bright and wide nioiguchi
Bōshi (tip): ōmaru with a long return
Horimono (carving): Buddhist ken on the omote side, bonji on the ura side
Nakago (tang): ubu with higaki file marks, three holes, signed Aoki Terunoshin Motonaga and dated Bunsei rokunen nigatsu no hi (A day in the second month of 1823)
Habaki (collar): two-piece, gold-foil
Nagasa (length from tip to beginning of tang): 12 7/8in (32.5cm)
Motohaba (width at start of tempered edge): 1 1/8in (2.7cm)
In a shirasaya (wood storage scabbard)
The koshira-e comprising a black-lacquer ribbed saya with a silver ishime-ji kojiri decorated with a swallow and wind chime in iro-e takazōgan, the shakudō nanako kozuka with long-tailed birds in gold and shakudō takazōgan, the tsuka wrapped in blue silk over same
and fitted with shakudō migaki-ji fuchi-gashira decorated with accouterments from the Nō play Ōkina in iro-e takazōgan, signed Kikuchi Terutora and with a kaō, the gilt and shakudō menuki formed as the box for the Nō mask, the shakudō migakiji tsuba with a Hannya mask, a flute, and scattered maple leaves in iro-e takazōgan
