ATTRIBUTED TO GASSAN MUNETSUGU (ACTIVE 1573-1592)

A Gassan Katana in Mounts
Momoyama period (1573-1615), late 16th/early 17th century
Sugata (configuration): honzukuri, iorimune, chūgissaki, toriizori
Kitae (forging pattern): ayasuri hada
Hamon (tempering pattern): chūsuguha, ko-gunome with nie and ashi
Bōshi (tip): suguha with a small return
Nakago (tang): ubu with kiri file marks and two holes
Habaki (collar): two-piece, silver-foil
Nagasa (length from tip to beginning of tang): 26 3/8in (67cm)
Motohaba (width at start of tempered edge): 1 1/4in (3.2cm)
Sakihaba (width before tip): 3/4in (1.9cm)
The koshira-e comprising a black-lacquer saya, the tsuka wrapped in black silk and mounted with shakudō migaki-ji fuchi-gashira decorated with ivy in iro-e takazōgan, and menuki formed as rice stalks, the circular copper plate tsuba decorated with dragons in katakiribori
