YAMASHIRO HIROYUKI (ACTIVE CIRCA 1596-1615)

A Yamashiro Tantō with Mounts
Momoyama (1573-1615) or Edo period (1615-1868), late 16th/early 17th century
Hirazukuri, iorimune forged in itame hada mixed with mokume hada in jinie, the tempered edge notare mixed with gunome midare with a wide nioiguchi and visible nie ending in a komaru bōshi with a short turnback, the omote side carved with Fudo Myoō and the ura with bonji, the ubu tang with kiri file marks, one hole and signed Tango no kami Fujiwara Hiroyuki, 11 1/4in (28.6cm) long, with a two-piece gilt-copper habaki, in a wood shirasaya storage scabbard
With a later koshira-e comprising a plain black-lacquer saya fitted with a shakudō nanako kozuka decorated with an Ise ebi and shime papers in gold overlays and shakudō takabori, the tsuka wrapped in same and fitted with gold and shakudō menuki formed as a Bugaku dancer's headpiece and flute
With a Tokubetsu Kichō Tōken (Especially Precious Sword) certificate # 18972 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword) October 18, 1979.
