ŌSHŪ SHIGEMUNE (ACTIVE CIRCA 1789-1804)

A Broad Masahide-School Tantō with Mounts
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century
The sword with a thick kasane of hirazukuri, marumune configuration forged in flowing itame hada with a chūsuguha tempered edge, with an ample nioiguchi of nioi and nie ending in an ō-maru bōshi with a long turnback, the omote side carved with bōhi ni tsure hi and the ura with goma bashi, the ubu tang with keshō file marks, one hole and signed Tsugaru Hirosaki no jū Shigemune, 11 1/4in (28.6cm) long, with a one-piece silver-foil habaki, in a wood shirasaya storage scabbard
The 19th-century koshira-e comprising a red and black-lacquer saya decorated in diagonal stripes and fitted with an iron tsuchime-ji kōjiri, kurikata and kozuka decorated with coiling vines and paulownia blossoms in gold hirazōgan, the tsuka wrapped in white silk over same and fitted with fuchi-gashira decorated to match the saya hardware and shibuichi and gilt menuki formed as sprays of cherry blossoms, the shakudō ishime-ji tsuba decorated with paulownia blossoms in gold takazōgan on the rim
