A TANTŌ IN MOUNTS

Momoyama (1573-1615) or Edo (1615-1868) period, early 17th century
Hirazukuri, iorimune, forged in itame hada and with a gunome midare tempered edge, the omote side carved with a ken within a bōhi and the ura side with bōhi ni tsure hi, the ubu tang with kiri file marks and two holes, 7 1/2in (19cm) long, with a one-piece gilt-copper habaki
The 19th-century aikuchi goshira-e comprising a black-lacquer saya decorated with ivy in gold and silver hiramaki-e and inlays of shell and hirame, the matching silver hardware all decorated with autumn flowers and grasses in katakiribori, fitted with a silver warikogai similarly decorated, the tsuka wrapped with silk and lacquered, the mekugi formed as cherry florets
