SUZUKI SADANORI (ACTIVE 1673-1681)

A Kaga Katana in Mounts
Edo period (1615-1868), 17th century
Sugata (configuration): honzukuri, iorimune with an extended kissaki, wide mihaba and toriizori curvature
Kitae (forging pattern): koitame hada with jinie
Hamon (tempering pattern): suguha starting from the hamachi gradually becoming gunome midare with a wide nioiguchi becoming even wider near the monouchi with nie, nioi and prominent ashi
Bōshi (tip): kaeri
Nakago (tang): ubu with one hole, sujikai file marks, and signed Suzuki Kaga no kami Sadanori
Habaki (collar): one-piece, gold-foil with stone-like finish
Nagasa (length from tip to beginning of tang): 27 1/4in (69.2cm)
Motohaba (width at start of tempered edge): 1 1/4in (3.1cm)
Sakihaba (width before tip): 13/16in (2.1cm)
The koshira-e comprising a black-lacquer saya with a lacquered-leather sheath bearing a heraldic crest in gilt, the tsuka wrapped in white silk over same and fitted with shakudō nanako fuchi-gashira and shakudō and gilt menuki, decorated with gingko leaves or heraldic crests matching the saya in gold takazōgan, the hexagonal iron plate tsuba carved with gingko leaves
With a Tokubetsu Kichō (Especially Precious Sword) certificate #363509 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyokai (The Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), dated October 14, 1978
