A JŪYŌ-RANKED YAMATO TAIMA KATANA

Kamakura period (1185- 1333), 13th/14th century
Sugata [configuration]: broad honzukuri, high shinogi, wide shinogiji, shallow toriizori curvature, extended chūgissaki
Kitae [forging pattern]: itame hada formed in a flowing pattern close to the edge, with much jinie and chikei
Hamon [tempering pattern]: suguha with a clear nioiguchi, with ashi, yō, sunagashi, hotsure and uchi-noke, kui-chigai forms and with nijūba and copious konie
Bōshi [tip]: straight with kaen-style hakikake and a deep return
Nakago [tang]: ōsuriage with katte-sagari file marks and four holes (two are plugged)
Habaki [collar]: two-piece, gilt-copper
Nagasa [length of blade]: 27 3/4in (70.4cm)
Motohaba (width at start of tempered edge): 1 3/16in (3cm)
Sakihaba (width before tip): 13/16in (2.1cm)
In a shirasaya (wood storage scabbard)
With a certificate designating this sword as the 41st Jūyō Tōken (Important sword) # 9726 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), dated November 10, 1995
