A HŌJU NAGINATA-NAOSHI WAKIZASHI IN MOUNTS

Nanbokuchō period (1333-1392), circa 1350
Sugata (configuration): naginata-naoshi zukuri
Kitae (forging pattern): textured itame hada mixed with mokume and masame hada in jinie
Hamon (tempering pattern): konie-based suguhagunome with nijūba, sunagashi and kinsuji
Bōshi (tip): suguha with touches of midarekomi
Nakago (tang): ōsuriage with kiri file marks and two holes
Habaki (collar): two-piece, silvered-copper
Nagasa (length from tip to beginning of tang): 18 1/4in (46.3cm)
Nineteenth-century koshira-e comprising a textured black-lacquer saya fitted with a shakudō nanako kozuka decorated with a shishi lion in peonies in iro-e takazōgan, the lacquered ray-skin tsuka polished so the nodules are flush with the surface of the handle and wrapped in blue silk, the iron tsuchimeji fuchi-gashira with birds and grasses in iro-e takazōgan, gilt and shakudō menuki formed as gourds, the copper oval plate tsuba carved in katakiribori with a dragon
