BIZEN YOKOYAMA KŌZUKE SUKESADA (1633-1721)

Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1664
Sugata (configuration): honzukuri, iorimune, chūgissaki, toriizori
Kitae (forging pattern): finely forged ko-itame hada in jinie
Hamon (tempering pattern): narrow suguha broadening slightly at the monouchi with a clear nioiguchi based in nie and nioi
Bōshi (tip): ōmaru with a long return
Nakago (tang): ubu with katte sagari file marks, two holes and signed Bishū Osafune no jūnin Yokoyama Kōzuke no Daijō Fujiwara Sukesada
Habaki (collar): one-piece, gilt-copper
Nagasa (length from tip to beginning of tang): 27 1/2in (69.8cm)
Motohaba (width at start of tempered edge): 1 1/4in (3.2cm)
Sakihaba (width before tip): 1in (2.54cm)
The nineteenth-century koshira-e comprising a red and black textured lacquer saya, the tsuka wrapped in white cotton over same fitted with shakudō migaki-ji fuchi-gashira decorated with lilies, signed Sekijōken Motozan saku, and shakudō, silver, and gold menuki formed as shells in water, the iron sukashi tsuba carved with shells and highlighted with gold nunomezōgan
