ENSANSHI TSUNETSUGU (ACTIVE CIRCA 1800)

A Shibuichi Kozuka, with Two Sets of Menuki
Edo period (1615-1868), 17th to early 19th century
Modeled in the form of a yaribukuro (covering for a spear), the surface chiseled to imitate leather and with gold and silver inlay for the stitching and silk ties, signed Ensanshi Tsunetsugu with a seal Tsune (Haynes 10930, but with the incorrect reading Shūsanshi); with a Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 432889 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword) dated February 21, 1997, and with a wood storage box; the first set of menuki Kyō Kinkō type, gold, each modeled in uchidashi (repoussé) as a shishi (Chinese mythical lion); with a Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 4004248 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword) dated January 17, 2014; the second set of menuki shakudō with gilding, modeled as a flowering branch of camellia (6)
