An Iron Tsuba
Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), mid-late 19th century
Rounded rectangular with migakiji (polished) ground and hammered-up rim, inlaid in gold and silver and chiseled in relief with cranes above waves, signed Wada Isshin tsukuru (Made by Wada Isshin); with a Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Especially Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 2003467 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword) dated June 28, 2016, and with a wood storage box (2)

Footnotes

This well-known design is sometimes named ippon tōchō (first court rank) in Japanese, in reference to the fact that similar motifs were thought to have been embroidered on the robes of senior Chinese officials in early times.
