An Iron Tsuba
Edo period (1615-1868), late 18th/19th century
Oval, the thick iron plate with a partially gilded squared-off rim chiseled in high relief and inlaid with gold, copper, shibuichi (copper-silver alloy), and shakudō (copper-gold alloy) with a scene from the Nō-drama Momijigari: a mask of Hannya, worn by the heroine after she turns into a fire-breathing demon, a folded fan, maple trees, and clouds; with a Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 4002785 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword) dated June 27, 2013, and with a wood storage box (2)
