WAKI-GOTŌ LINEAGE

A Shakudō Tsuba
Edo period (1615-1868), 17th/18th century
Almost circular, with an applied gold nekogaki (striated) rim, the surface worked with very fine circumferential nanako punching, on one side five and on the other side three shishi (Chinese mythical lions) in gold and shakudō relief, both ryōhitsu opening plugged with gold nekogaki; with a Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Especially Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 223837 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword) dated December 15, 1998, and with a wood storage box (2)
