NAOMITSU

A Shakudō Tsuba
Edo period (1615-1868), late 18th/early 19th century
Oval, the surface worked with an ishime-ji (stone) texture, inlaid in copper, gold, and silver and chiseled in relief with a rustic dwelling, sparrows, and prunus blossom, signed Naomitsu; with a Hozon Tōsōgu (Sword Fitting Worthy of Preservation) certificate # 4006730 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword) dated January 16, 2012, and with a wood storage box (2)

Footnotes

From the style of both the decoration and the signature, this artist is thought to be a different individual from Yanagawa Naomitsu (1733-1809), but seems to have worked at about the same time as him.
