ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM. 1527-1598.

Americae sive novi orbis nova descriptio. Antwerp: [1571].
Hand-colored double-page engraved map, 366 x 476 mm, Latin text on verso, with ornamental cartouche, ships and sea creature. Framed. Even toning, some slight darkening at centerfold, margins somewhat brief, but present, an attractive example overall.

"One of the most famous and easily recognizable maps of America" (Burden). First plate (of 3) with 7mm thick strapwork border of interwoven circle and diamond design, the largest ship in the Pacific sailing westwards and graduations between the longitudinal marks. Second state with the Azores correctly labeled, but with second line of text ("dinem...") flush with the left margin. The first issue is particularly scarce and differs only in the labeling of Canarie insuale. The Chilean coastline with the large protuberance is one of the most noticeable features on this plate and wasn't corrected until the third plate. Burden Mapping of North America 39 (pictured on jacket); Tooley Mapping of America p 320; Wheat Northwest Coast 80.
