26 volumes (of 32). Numerous engraved plates. 12mo (160 x 95 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt with 5 raised bands, morocco lettering pieces. Heavily rubbed, most spine ends chipped, joints cracking. Lacking volumes I, VIII, IX, XI, XII, and XIII.
WITH: Supplement. 1774-1782. 11 volumes (of 13). Lacking volumes XI and XIII. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1774-1782. 12mo (163 x 94 mm). Numerous engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt with 5 raised bands, morocco lettering pieces. Heavily rubbed, most spine ends chipped, joints cracking.

Volume I (of 30) only. 12mo (165 x 95 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt with 5 raised bands, morocco lettering pieces. Rubbed, joints starting. Lacking all but the first volume.

38 volumes in all, bound in complementary contemporary style, with most of the 12mo edition of Buffon's general work on natural history and its supplement. Buffon, a member of minor gentry in Bordeaux who was later elevated to the title of Count, was a polymath and avid scientist. He was appointed head of the Jardin du Roi in 1739, and appointed to the Académie Française in 1753. Despite having his detractors, this work was translated into numerous languages and widely published.
