ALI PASHA OF IOANNINA.

DAVENPORT, W., illus. Historical Portraiture of the Leading Events in the Life of Ali Pacha, Vizer of Epirus, Surnamed the Lion, in a Series of Designs.... London: Thomas McLean, 1823.
Folio (377 x 266 mm). 6 hand-colored aquatint engravings after Davenport. Publisher's red boards with printed paper label to upper cover, rebacked with printed paper label to spine. Offset from plates, a few stray spots, boards with mildly rubbed, mainly at extremities, an attractive copy.

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL BOARDS, plates watermarked 1822. A large copy of this picturesque life of Ali Pasha, the Turkish pasha whose court employed the Greek language, as that was the language of most of his populace. The text is taken from Beauchamp's Life of Ali Pacha, the work providing a romanticized account of the extraordinary life of the Albanian-born Ali Pasha (1741-1822), who was given the epithet Aslan, or "The Lion." Abbey Travel 206 (for 1825 watermark); Atabey 325; Blackmer 454.
