HAWAIIAN STATE FLAG OF COL. JOHN H. SOPER.

Canton of Union Jack against a field composed of 8 horizontal stripes, three red, three white and two blue, in alternating pattern, canton printed in colors, field stripes stitched, with white denim header featuring grommets at each end, stamped "EMERSON MFG. CO., S.F., CAL. MAKERS," 1.54 x 2.37 meters; toning to white stripes and small losses from moths overall.

The Hawaiian flag has represented the Monarchy, the provisional government, the Republic, the territory and the state of Hawaii since 1843, when the current design was standardized. It is the only US state flag to incorporate the flag of a foreign nation within. The Union Jack design is a nod to the close relationship between England and King Kamehameha I. This is Col. John H. Soper's Hawaiian flag, though we don't know when he acquired it.
