On the heels of the 1853 smallpox epidemic, King Kamehameha IV proposed building a hospital for the Hawaiian people as one of his first orders of business as King. He and his wife, Queen Emma, went door-to-door to solicit funding, exceeding their goal in about a month. Forbes 2408.
