8vo (207 x 127 mm). Stitched, removed from binding, tears to title page at gutter, minor chipping, tape to first text page from framing, framed with plaque to 670 x 420 mm.

FIRST EDITION TO INCLUDE MENTION OF THE OWEN TRIAL in relation to Zenger's trial. William Owen was a bookseller who, like Zenger, was tried for libel against the government. "One of the famous decisions in legal history, establishing the epochal doctrine of the freedom of the press; probably written by James Alexander, one of Zenger's attorneys" (Howes Z6, note).
