ROCKEFELLER SIGNED STANDARD OIL TRUST SHARE.

ROCKEFELLER, JOHN DAVID. 1839-1937. Document Signed ("John D. Rockefeller), issuing 500 shares of Standard Oil Trust stock to executive John Huntington, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 p, folio (190 x 286 mm), n.p., April 5, 1882, being certificate #200, with engraved borders and vignette at upper center, framed to 475 x 745 mm overall.

As a response to the increased regulation from the various states toward monopolistic practices, Rockefeller and his fellow Standard Oil executives transferred the ownership of the company into the Standard Oil Trust in 1882. The "stateless" trust (no location given on this document) was a brilliant workaround of laws preventing corporations incorporated in one state from owning the stock of companies based elsewhere. The concept was so successful it was quickly adopted by other corporations.
