ROCKEFELLER SIGNED STANDARD OIL STOCK CERTIFICATE, ISSUED TO HIMSELF.

ROCKEFELLER, JOHN DAVID. 1839-1937. Document Signed ("John D. Rockefeller") three times, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, being one share (#279) of Standard Oil stock certificate issued to Rockefeller, 1 p, folio (160 x 265 mm), Cleveland, OH, April 8, 1881, also signed by HENRY FLAGLER, with engraved vignettes at upper center and lower left, framed to 510 x 960 mm.

John D. Rockefeller founded Standard Oil in 1870 and soon the company came to dominate the nascent petroleum industry in the U.S. The company's monopolistic practices led the various states in which he did business to enact laws limiting the scale of companies practicing within their borders. As a result, Rockefeller and his fellow board members reorganized the company into the Standard Oil Trust in 1882, just a year after this certificate was issued, allowing them to skirt many of the state regulations until the passage of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act in 1890.

This document is signed three times by Rockefeller: at the lower right as President of the company; at the upper center as the recipient of the share; and on the verso confirming receipt.
