CONTEMPORARY MANUSCRIPT REVOLUTIONARY WAR MAP.

Manuscript map, titled at head, "Sketch of the Roads from Kings bridge to White Plains/ 1779," folio (760 x 480 mm), on a single sheet, pen-and-ink, with watercolor, dated 1779, showing war time structures, roads, homesteads, and redoubts, including "rebel lines," thick rule on three sides, likely trimmed at top edge, with additional pencil annotations "Tarleton" and additional structures/forts drawn in.

CONTEMPORARY MANUSCRIPT REVOLUTIONARY WAR MAP OF THE ROADS BETWEEN KINGS BRIDGE AND WHITEPLAINS IN 1779. Likely British in origin, this manuscript map shows present day Westchester during Tarleton's final attempts during 1779 to draw Washington south to engage. The region was for many years a disputed buffer between the British stronghold in New York, and the Continental forces in the highlands above surrounding Peekskill, and a roving ground for John Simcoe and his Queen's Rangers. Tarleton would be repositioned south to Charleston in 1780, ending his operations in the area. For similar, see LC Maps of North America, 1750-1789, 1165, 1166, 1167 & 1170.
