LINCOLN'S SECOND INAUGURAL.

Grand Reception of the Notabilities of the Nation at the White House 1865. New York: Major and Knapp, 1865.
Lithograph with hand-coloring, 455 x 535 mm, matted and framed to 520 x 900 mm. Mild toning. Closed tear at upper right margin just impinging on image; stamp and repairs at lower left.
Exhibited: Abraham Lincoln: Railsplitter to Rushmore, The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, Simi Valley, CA, 2013.

This elaborate scene of President and Mrs. Lincoln greeting General and Mrs. Grant in the grand ballroom of the White House while political and military leaders look on was originally published in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. For the Second Inaugural, the Lincolns held a public reception attended by over 6,000 people. Visible near the Lincolns and the Grants are Andrew Johnson, Generals Sherman and Winfield Scott, Edward Stanton, Salmon P. Chase, and many others. The large format lithograph was produced as a premium bonus for buyers of Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner, a weekly family newspaper.
