LINCOLN TAKES A CASE ON CONTINGENCY.

LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. 1809-1865. Autograph Document Signed in text ("A. Lincoln") being a promise to pay in Lincoln's hand from C.L. Pate for legal representation "whenever the five suits ... are finally decided in my favor," 1 p, 126 x 200 mm, Danville, Ill, May 15, 1852, docketed to the verso, "C.L. Pate note / $80.00," contained in dry mounting tissue, framed with plaque to 500 x 500 mm.

A LINCOLN FEE AGREEMENT FOR 1852 LEGAL REPRESENTATION IN WHICH HE WILL BE PAID ONLY WHEN THEY ACHIEVE SUCCESS. Lincoln represented Charles L. Pate in The People v. Pate in a case regarding debt collection, that went all the way to the Supreme Court, where he lost. The agreement here in Lincoln's hand stipulates that payment is not due until the matter is "finally decided in my [Pate's] favor. See Lincoln Day-by-Day: A Chronology, 1809-1865, Volume II.
