CHECK FOR JOHN PAUL JONES' SHARE AS CAPTAIN OF THE BONHOMME RICHARD.

JONES, JOHN PAUL. 1747-1792. Endorsement Signed ("Paul Jones") on verso of a Check Signed of ROBERT MORRIS drawn on the Bank of the United States at Philadelphia authorizing the payment of 13,991 livres to Chevalier John Paul Jones, in French, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 p, oblong 8vo (95 x 215 mm), Dec 9, 1782, light toning, framed to 870 x 425 mm.
Provenance: sold Anderson Galleries, 1937.

After his heroics aboard the Bonhomme Richard in 1779, John Paul Jones arrived in Paris and was named a Chevalier by Louis XVI. The present document directs the French banker Monf. Grand to pay Jones 13,991 livres, his prize money for his service aboard the Bonhomme Richard. Reference to the amount (13,991 livres) paid on this date can be found in a 1786 accounting by John Paul Jones of monies paid to him by the United States government, and in an 1836 congressional report by the Committee on Revolutionary Claims. Evan Thomas also delves into Jones's travails collecting the prize money for Bonhomme Richard (John Paul Jones: Sailor, Hero, Father of the American Navy, pp 309-312). See Life and Correspondence of John Paul Jones (1830) p 359 and Memorial of Janette Taylor, et al., Representatives of John Paul Jones, December 12, 1836. Referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Claims, p 10 and ll.
