ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY. 1767-1848.

Lectures on Rhetoric and Oratory, Delivered to the Classes of Senior and Junior Sophisters in Harvard University. Cambridge: Hilliard & Metcalf, 1810.
2 volumes. 8vo. Publisher's boards, paper labels to spines, deckled edges. Toning and spotting to preliminary and end leaves, upper hinge of both volumes cracked, chipping and loss to heads and tails of spines.

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL BOARDS of the publication of the series of lectures John Quincy Adams delivered as Harvard's first Boylston Professor of Rhetoric. Adams believed in the classical approach to rhetoric, that oratory should have both a literary and a persuasive component. During this period, he also served as Professor of logic at Brown University and as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. In 1809 he was appointed by James Madison as the first U.S. Minister to Russia, and it was while serving in that position that this volume made its appearance.
