GOULD, JAY. 1836-1892.

Document Signed ("Jay Gould"), certificate for one share of the Vineland Rail Road Company issued to George B. Roberts, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 p, oblong 4to (130 x 246 mm), New Jersey, March 31, 1880, light toning, float-mounted and framed with portrait to 565 x 425 mm.

Railroad magnate Jay Gould began his career at a tannery before venturing into speculation and the railroad industry. He famously wrested control of the Erie Railway from Cornelius Vanderbilt through the clever use of stock manipulations, and also caused the Black Friday panic of September 24, 1869 through his attempt to corner the gold market. The present document is a stock certificate in the Vineland Rail Road Company, one of a number of small railways swallowed up by Gould in his efforts to consolidate the rails in the 19th century.
