FRANKLIN SIGNS A WAR HORSE BOND.

FRANKLIN, BENJAMIN. 1706-1790. Endorsement Signed ("Order to be drawn / B. Franklin"), on verso of Revolutionary War horse bond signed of James Chamberlain, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 p, 8vo (145 x 180 mm), Pennsylvania, August 12, 1780, signed on the verso, some toning and creasing overall, framed to 395 x 557 mm.

In part: "York County, Pennsylvania [no. 17] / I do hereby certify that Thomas Steel of the township of Strabane, has furnished this state, for the Use of the United States, with one bay horse, nine years old, fifteen hands high for a wagon which has been appraised by two Freeholders on oath at the Sum of Thirty Five Pounds ... for which the state is now justly indebted to him in that sum, with interest.

This document, signed by Franklin on the verso in his capacity as a member of Pennsylvania's Supreme Council, compensates one Thomas Steel for the loss of his wagon horse which has been appropriated for military purposes.
