BURR'S STOCK CERTIFICATE IN THE PENNSYLVANIA POPULATION COMPANY.

NICHOLSON, JOHN. Document Signed ("Jno Nicholson"), stock certificate in the Pennsylvania Population Company issued to AARON BURR, partially printed and accomplished in mss, 1 p, oblong 4to (200 x 280 mm), March 29, 1794, minor splits at fold, a two inch piece of left edge missing, framed to 410 x 665 mm.
Provenance: sold Christie's New York, Books and Manuscripts, October 28, 2001, lot 15.

The Pennsylvania Population Company was established in 1792 to sell acreage in Western Pennsylvania which Nicholson, already a successful land speculator in the region, had purchased from the government using his many connections. Burr was himself an eager land speculator, and while he served as Attorney General of New York (1789-1791) he was suspected of participating in questionable deals involving state lands. In the case of the Pennsylvania Population Company, however, the price of land fell dramatically before the company could sell its parcels, leading both Nicholson and Robert Morris to debtor's prison.
