4o (265 x 210 mm). Engraved folding frontispiece, 23 engraved plates (including 16 hand-colored of costumes, one hand-colored plan, folding map, and folding Turkish firman plate). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards. Rubbed, joints cracking, corners bumped, offsetting to title page, foxing.

FIRST EDITION. Wittman served with the Royal Artillery as part of the British military mission that accompanied Turkish forces marching against the French in Egypt during the Napoleonic Wars. He took the opportunity to describe the costumes, cultures and scenery from Constantinople (Istanbul) to Jaffa and Cairo, as well as Mediterranean islands on the return voyage.
