SIKKIM, 1890-1908. 56 large photographs by White of Sikkim, taken 1890-1908 gelatin silver and platinum prints (290 x 240 mm. and similar), mounted on card (455 x 360 mm) recto and verso, including two large panoramas (3 prints joined approx. 840 x 210 mm), captions mostly printed and glued in, three boards bear the blindstamp of the photographic firm of "Johnston & Hoffmann, India." Two cloth folding cases.

A FINE COLLECTION OF LARGE PHOTOGRAPHS OF SIKKIM BY JOHN CLAUDE WHITE. In 1889 John Claude White was posted to Sikkim, a kingdom high in the Himalaya Mountains. To map and survey the border, he conducted detailed explorations on multiple visits to every region of Sikkim. He undertook an 11-month journey through the kingdom in 1892. The photographs in this collection are among the earliest photographs of Sikkim and capture vivid scenes of a vanishing culture and a changing environment. The Meyer collection of John Claude White Photographs formed the first dedicated exhibit of his work at the Rubin Museum in 2010, as well as the basis for their 2005 book, In the Shadows of the Himalayas, Tibet, Bhuttan, Nepal, Sikkim, A photographic Record of John Claude White. According to American Book Prices Current photographs by John Claude White are very rare and no other collection of this subject and sizes sold at auction in the past 45 years.
