[BOWIE, JAMES. 1796-1836.]

Manuscript Document Signed by William Oldham and others officially appointing Oldham as the administrator of the estate of James Bowie just over a month after his death at the Alamo, 1 p, 345 x 210 mm, Department of the Brazos, [Texas,] April 18, 1836, docketed to the verso, "Authorization Wm. Oldham To take The Estate of James Bouey," creasing, minor chipping, framed with descriptive plaque to 650 x 405 mm.

FIRST ATTEMPT TO SETTLE THE ESTATE OF BIG JIM BOWIE JUST A MONTH AFTER THE ALAMO. James Bowie was a larger than life Texas legend, known for his prowess with the knife that would bear his name, the "Bowie knife." He died in the final battle of the Alamo, March 6, 1836.

William Oldham fought in the Texas Revolution and became part of the Texas Cavalry. In November 1836, he petitioned the Texas congress as "administrator" of the Bowie estate for funds owed Bowie in his military service. He continued to advertise for the estate through early 1837.

However, ultimately his administrations would come to naught, and Bowie's (surprisingly meager) estate went to the family of his wife, under the administration of his relative Eugenio Navarro. The battle over the estate and Bowie's many land claims both real and spurious would continue through the 19th-century. A fascinating document from the legendary Texas pioneer just a month after his death at the Alamo. See Dobie, "James Bowie, Big Dealer," Southwestern Historical Quarterly, 60:3 (1957), pp 337-357.
