Louis Vuitton introduced their first line of wristwatches in 2002 under the Tambour moniker as an homage to the first watch made in the west in 1540. The Tambour was quintessential Louis Vuitton in design, and accessories, with a fine LV leather strap and the LV monogram discretely engraved over the piece. In 2009, for the biennial Only Watch auction, Louis Vuitton and Paul Pettavino, the son of Luc Pettavino (the creator of Only Watch) designed a new take on the GMT complication with rotating cubes to note the hour of the wearers current timezone. The watch was additionally accompanied by a small version of the Louis Vuitton travel case in the damier square pattern, however, with a unique hand-painted box designed by Paul and the head of leather design at LV, Jean-Philippe Martin.
