WEST, NATHANAEL. 1903-1940.

The Day of the Locust New York: Random House, 1939.
8vo. Publisher's red cloth, paper spine label, red pictorial dust jacket. Spine cloth sunned, some staining to paper spine label and edges of covers at joints, jacket restored with paper replaced and in-painted at corners and spine ends, old tape residue on inside of jacket.
Provenance: Richard Wallace (bookplate and inscription).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION: "Dear Richard — I hope you find this amusing. It's the way this town made me feel when I first came here several years ago, and still feel on certain Sundays. Sincerely, Nathaniel West. Holly_d- June 20 1939." The inscription is to film director Richard Wallace (1894-1951), whose bookplate appears on the front paste-down. Starting in 1925, Wallace directed more than 30 films for the major studios through 3 decades, so the Hollywood-weary, yet rather wistful inscription is very fitting. PRESENTATION COPIES OF WEST'S HOLLYWOOD CLASSIC ARE RARE.
