Footnotes

Literature
A Gray, A Life in Pictures, Edinburgh, 2010, pp 42-43

Gray modelled the faces of the disciples on travellers on the Glasgow underground railway. The picture exists only in reproduction, the original having been lost after having been "left too long with a photocopying shop. When I went to collect it the firm no longer existed."

This version is a rare example for two reasons. The first is that the fact that Gray has annotated the notebook on the table. He lists all people depicted and also adds "They have no wine" as well as the signature and date. The second is the later application of the blue paint in the background.
