Footnotes

Provenance
Gifted to Andrew Shierlaw in the mid 40's by a friend, whilst studying at Edinburgh University, thence by decent.

Both Hunter and Fergusson used small panels in the early stages of their careers, for economical and practical reasons. It allowed them to record scenes spontaneously, en plein air. The lively, dabbed-on brushstrokes pick out details of the figures in the foreground of this painting.
