The helmet was painted in these colours as Read was a fan of Luton FC and "The Hatters" had historically worn red jerseys from 1889-1896. This helmet was worn when Read won his first race at Oulton Park, having ridden from Luton he arrived at the circuit, stripped all the lights and accessories off his Gold Star, won the race, put everything back on and rode home. This helmet was also worn at his first Manx Grand Prix win.
