This charming scene of Krishna and Radha in a forest bower follows the style of the famed Kangra series of 1775 (Archer, Indian paintings from the Punjab Hills, 1973, p. 206, nos. 33i-vii). Here, the distinctive profiles of Krishna and Radha, the overpowering emphasis on the bending trees, and the star blossoms on slender leafless branches are the hallmarks of Garhwal paintings of the period. (ibid, 1973, p. 77, no. 3iii).
Compare with a scene of Nanda asking Radha to escort Krishna back home most likely from the same series in the National Museum, New Delhi (51.207/8), and a closely related folio from a Krishna Rukmini series in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Archer, Indian paintings from the Punjab Hills, 1973, p. 83, no. 12).

Collection of Asbjorn Lunde (1927-2017), New York
