The present lot is a study for The Artist and His Wife, 1930, painted two years after he married Lady Pansy Pakenham. Portrayed in a bountiful landscape beneath an apple tree, the ground laden with fruit, the painting is reminiscent of Gainsborough's Mr and Mrs Andrews, circa 1750. Echoing the offset couple in an English arcadia, Lamb has portrayed himself and his new wife in a quiet haven of English countryside.
