This study of sea and sky depicts Cardigan Bay seen from the cliffs above the village of Aberporth, where Brett spent three months from the beginning of July 1891. Although unimpressed with the village itself, which he described as "this god-forsaken hole", he found plenty of suitable material in the surrounding area, which enabled him to paint nearly thirty oil sketches and begin three larger works while there.
