Provenance
Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Los Angeles
Acquired directly from the above by the present owner
Sandra Caldwell was a visionary art collector and pioneering champion of Minimalism; artists who were lesser known at the time in Caldwell's home of the West Coast. Working in partnership with Daniel Weinberg, who ran an eponymous gallery in Los Angeles from 1973 until his recent passing earlier this year, Sandra acquired many of the works in her collection directly from the gallery throughout the 1980s. Her collection has remained almost completely unseen by the public aside from a seminal 1974 exhibition dedicated to her, staged at the University Art Museum at the University of California, Berkeley's and entitled The Bay Area Collects: Sandra and Breck Caldwell. This exhibition featured Carl Andre's Post and Lintel (Element Series) (1960/1971) which is featured in this sale (Lot 52), as well as visionary works by fellow Minimalist artists Richard Tuttle and Brice Marden. Her keen eye and interest in artists who expanded the cannon of Minimalism, such as West Coast based Max Cole, is evident in the works offered in the present auction.
