A Rasulid brass basin
Yemen, 14th/ 15th Century

of rounded form with tapering sides, the body decorated with an engraved band containing inscription-filled cartouches overlaid with rosettes interspersed by roundels containing flowerheads and foliate interlace, the interstices with lozenge motifs, the well with a rosette
27 cm. diam.


Inscriptions: al-'ali .../... al-'alim a/al-maliki al-'ali/ al-'alim al-'alim a/ al-'alim al-'alim a/al-'alim ..., 'The high... the learned, the possessor, the high, the learned, the learned, the learned, the learned, the learned...'.

Two similar Rasulid bowls dated to the 14th/ 15th Century are published in Doris Behrens-Abouseif, Metalwork from the Arab World and the Mediterranean, Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah, The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, 2021, cat nos 86 and 87.
