Footnotes

Max Adolf Pfeiffer initiated the production of a porcelain glockenspiel to mark the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the town of Meissen in 1929. A porcelain glockenspiel was made in 1736 for the Japanese Palace by J.J. Kaendler and his assistants, though the tone quality left something to be desired. The new glockenspiel provided an opportunity to demonstrate the technical and design mastery required to produce a melodic instrument. The first playable example was installed in the tower of the Frauenkirche in Meissen in 1929; others followed in 1930 in the press pavillion of the Dresden hygiene exhibition (subsequently in the Zwinger palace), and in 1934 in Bremen (Lechelt 2011, pp. 110-111).
