A very similar work by the artist, also titled The outward bound, is held in the collection of Leeds City Art Gallery (no. LEEAG.PA.1912.0268). This comparable work is compositionally almost identical, however it depicts RMS Titanic in the distance, presumably departing on her ill-fated maiden voyage. The present work seems to focus on the traditional use of sail; with the small sailing boat in the foreground, the sailing ship being tugged out of the harbour, and the wind powered mill to the right. In contrast, the Leeds picture, painted nine years later, provides an image of the future, with the state-of-the-art steam powered Titanic taking the place of the sailing ship and a gas powered lamp taking the place of the windmill.
