In 1920, Georg Kolbe modeled the half life-size figure of Aufblickende, an example of which is now in the Kolbe estate at the Georg Kolbe Museum in Berlin. In the present lot, the artist presents just the head of Aufblickende. By slightly changing the head's positioning and adding a plinth and a stone base as a cube with oblique edges, Kolbe nimbly arranges the figure's head as an autonomous sculpture. Like the half life-size figure, the head is modeled in geometrically stylized shapes with black patina. Although the size of the life-time editions is unknown, the present cast is rare. Cast in the early 1920s, Kopf der Aufblickenden is a significant example of Kolbe's hallmark, expressionist style.
