'What it really amounts to from a pictorial point of view is that I am very concerned with the unknown and the destiny of creatures and human beings and the infinity of one's existence, the infinity of life as such, and I am very interested in Greek mythology and Greek temples. And there is within a temple, in both Greek temples and Egyptian places, the 'inner sancta sanctorum' that no man has ever been to, no God has ever been to, because it is merely a void that has been made into space by building a brick wall round it without a space, without an entrance to it. And I call these paintings Adytum and Aduton, because I am interested in the infinite and I am interested in the remoteness of one's existence... I'm trying to find that kind of imbalance which produces the balance that produces the tug-of-war that produces the balance that produces the infinity' (Paul Feiler, quoted in Michael Raeburn, Paul Feiler: 1918-2013, London, Lund Humphries, 2018, p.129).
